It’s not often that an artist would put a promising career on hold for an unknown project. In boygenius, we see not just one, but three of the indie folk-rock scene’s brightest stars join forces. boygenius is the brainchild of singer-songwriters Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers, and Lucy Dacus. Baker was the catalyst in bringing the three together having toured with both Dacus and Bridgers in the past. Once the three decided they wanted to go out on the road together, it was quickly decided they should put out an album for fans to get a sense of what to expect at their shows.
The result is the self-titled EP boygenius which does a remarkable job of showcasing each of the singer’s differences while also bringing them together in a cohesive unit. All of the singers takes the spotlight on certain songs, and on “Me and My Dog” it is Phoebe Bridger’s who takes the lead. The song sees Bridgers reflecting on a relationship that clearly still has a grip on her. At the start you would be forgiven if you thought this was a love song. Soon it becomes clear that the relationship Bridgers is singing about is over and she is struggling to move on. There is something so melancholy about Bridger’s voice that it just pull you into the song. When we hit the chorus and Baker and Dacus join in, we see the strength of the group and why they are a force to be reckoned with.
The band is currently on tour in support of their new EP and will make an appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers on November 5th singing this song. Check out “Me & My Dog” at the link below and let me know what you think in the comments!
