Sometimes you find love when your not looking, and many times that is the greatest kind. That is the premise of the 2012 song, “Never Meant to Love You” by Cory Chisel and the Wandering Sons. The Wisconsin native has made a solid career in the Americana world as both a singer and songwriter. In 2016, he was nominated for a Grammy for helping to write the song “The Traveling Kind” by Emmylou Harris. He is also the co-founder of the Refuge Foundation for the Arts that helps provide support to artists around the country.
The influences on the song are wide ranging although it would probably be considered a folk song. There are definitely hints of classic rock and country in there as well. It was recorded by singer-songwriter and Raconteurs member Brendan Benson, and was co-written by Semisonic front man, Dan Wilson. Lyrically it is a pretty straight forward love song. Man falls in love with woman unexpectedly, and they live happily ever after. Chisel’s voice has a distinct sound to it and the harmonies provided by Adriel Denae really help to highlight the song
“Well I never meant to take you to the party that night
Yeah I never meant to kiss you in the pale moonlight
And there’s nothing, nothing I can do about it now
I never meant to love you but it’s too late now”
Most recently Cory Chisel released a record this year as part of the band Traveller while Adriel Denae released her debut record. If you are looking for more music to digest from these two, those are great places to start. Check out “Never Meant to Love You” at the link below and let me know in the comments what you think!
