The last time Frank Turner was outspoken about politics he found himself in the midst of a firestorm of death threats. Yet on ‘Be More Kind,’ he dives right back in with his most political album to date. Subtlety won’t be found on many of the songs, with Turner clearly stating his thoughts on the current state of affairs in the world. It’s when Frank adds a little nuance on the album that I think he shines brightest. His latest single is the pop friendly “Little Changes,” and with its upbeat nature and silly video you would be remiss if its meaning escapes you.
The song tackles the inability to make large scale fixes in the world and at a personal level. At the world scale, this refers to political agendas having trouble coming to common ground with those on the other side of the aisle. This song looks to bring us together with the hopes that everyone can make some “little changes.”
“Giving up too easy when we could’ve tried a little bit harder
Standing to the side as the neighbourhood went to the dogs
We spend our energy getting angry instead of being kinder
Singing hymns of praise in a city given up on by the gods”
In an interview with Clash magazine, Turner talks about how the song began as a simple folk song about making changes in a relationship. However, over time the music and lyrics grew to have a more expansive meaning. Featuring a horn section and a chorus of background singers, this song is sure to be a hit at live shows. While it is definitely a pop song, you can still hear the remnants of Turner’s punk past. Hopefully his fans will continue to support him as he embraces a softer side, but if not, this song should help expose him to a whole new audience.
Frank Turner is currently on a worldwide tour in support of his latest album ‘Be More Kind [Explicit]‘ including a stop at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago on June 23rd. Check out the fun and silly video for “Little Changes” down below and let me know what you think!
