Pete Yorn & Scarlett Johansson – Bad Dreams

It has been nine years since one of the oddest collaborations- Indie rock favorite, Pete Yorn, and actress, Scarlett Johansson- released their surprisingly strong record, ‘Break Up.’  The odd collaboration started when Yorn was looking to write a duet album, and he found a willing partner in Johansson, who was looking to enter the music world.  Following ‘Break Up,’ the two resumed their respective careers, and the record seemed destined to be a one off project.  Yet, here we are, 9 years later, with the duo planning to release their new EP ‘Apart’ on June 1st.  Yorn describes, “If Break Up was dealing with an unraveling relationship, Apart is dealing with the aftermath.”

The first single off the EP is the rumbling pop rock song, “Bad Dreams.”  The song follows a couple who has broken up and realizes that they will never be fully over each other.  Overall, it is a pretty simple song, both lyrically and musically.  Yorn’s strength is the ability to create a mood for his audience. Fans of his breakout record ‘musicforthemorningafter’ should take a liking to “Break Up.”  For Johansson, she said she was drawn to a reunion with Yorn, because she felt their voices mesh well together.  While best known for her role in the Avengers movies, Johnansson has been involved in a number of musical projects.  She has released a Tom Waits cover album, sang in a power pop band called The Singles, and most recently was the singing porcupine in the hit film Sing.

While I don’t think it’s likely that Yorn and Johansson will go on tour to support this record, I also didn’t expect them to release a second album- so you never know!

Even if the duo don’t tour, you should still be on the lookout for Yorn to hit the road again soon.   Johansson can of course be seen in the new Avengers: Infinity War movie, which is in theaters now.  Take a listen to the song, and let me know what you think!

  1. I can’t believe it’s been nine years since this came out… I’ve always liked Scarlett’s music, I was in love with The Moon Song she sang in the movie “Her”
