Dermot Kennedy – Young & Free

Irish singer-songwriter Dermot Kennedy has released his new single “Young & Free” this month.  Getting his start by busking in the streets of Dublin, Dermot eventually landed an opening spot for Glen Hansard at the latter’s sold-out Christmas show.  The exposure from that followed by  tremendous showing on streaming apps like Spotify have gotten his songs heard by more people than an artist without a record label could ever hope.  Already making a name for himself in Europe, Dermot is starting to break out in the rest of the world.  He currently finds himself on a sold out tour of the USA and Australia before he begins playing the festival circuits this Summer.

“Young & Free” is produced by Mike Dean, who is most known for his work with hip-hop artists like Kanye West and Travis Scott.  Earlier Dermot songs were more straight forward folk songs, but lately he has been adding hip-hop influences into his singles with “Young & Free” being no exception.  While Dermot is certainly not the first folk artist to implement hip-hop elements into his songs, his powerful voice help him stand out from the others.  Of the song Dermot says “I wanted it to have that contrast, to represent how you can pine for the past, for simpler times, but how you have to be resilient in the present and last, come what may.”  What I like is that contrast is also prevalent in the song, with the verses being laid back and mellow before taking off in the choruses.  You can check out “Young & Free” at the link below and see him perform at Lollapalooza in Chicago in August.
